Balancing compassion with boundaries when working with students: an online session for academic colleagues

One-to-one interactions with students may sometimes be challenging - such as talking about academic performance or delivering bad news, or where a student is frustrated or not engaging. This session explores how we can show compassion in these interactions while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

About the event

This event is now sold out - see our other training events.

Do you sometimes find yourselves in one-to-one interactions with students that you find challenging? These interactions can take many different forms.  They may arise when we are having a particularly tricky conversation with a student – for example, when we are talking to a student about their academic performance or when we have to deliver bad news.  They may also be situations in which we are working with a student who is frustrated, hostile, not engaging with what we are saying, or in a distressed state.  How do we show compassion in these interactions, while also setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries?

This two and a half-hour online live training event provides an opportunity to explore these kinds of tricky situations and take away practical ways to respond effectively the next time we find ourselves in these situations with a student.

Who is this session for?

This session is aimed particularly at colleagues in academic roles – including personal tutors, module tutors, programme and module leaders, and senior tutors.

Other colleagues (such as professional services colleagues) are welcome to join the session, given that many of the skills we are covering will be relevant to all colleagues who work with students; however, please note that the examples we are using are more likely to reflect more academic and course-related interactions with students.

While this training is aimed at higher education, colleagues in further education, colleagues delivering private tuition or colleagues working in other similar educational settings will also find the content very relevant.

Learning outcomes

During this event, participants will:

  1. Discuss the kinds of interactions that can be, or can become, difficult in one-to-one work with students – such as when we are having a tricky conversation with a student about their academic performance or engagement, delivering bad news to a student, or working with a student who is in distress.
  2. Reflect on how we get the balance right in these interactions, by being supportive and engaged with the student while also maintaining appropriate boundaries and looking after our own wellbeing.
  3. Explore and learn about key practical skills for responding to different types of difficult interaction.
