Policy Pitstop: Defining Safeguarding in Higher Education

What exactly does the term “safeguarding” mean in higher education today? When should it be used for cases of sexual violence and other types of misconduct? How can institutions cope with the multiple reporting systems that appear to cover safeguarding-related concerns and navigate this increasingly complex landscape? Are changes in demographics, such as the increase in students with neurodivergent diagnoses, bringing more casework into the realm of safeguarding?

This free-to-attend 1-hour online Policy Pitstop session is an opportunity to discuss informally with others in the sector. The session starts with a short briefing from us where we will outline a back-to-basics approach to safeguarding, followed by a discussion on scenarios that pose challenges for the sector’s handling and reporting of safeguarding concerns.

Who is this discussion for?

This discussion is for anyone working in higher education who is interested in safeguarding arrangements within their institution, with particular relevance to managers and practitioners who are involved in leading, managing and implementing safeguarding.

While this discussion is aimed at those in higher education, colleagues in further education and other organisations where staff or students work with children and adults at risk will also find the discussion relevant to their settings.

Who is leading this discussion?

The discussion will be led by Susan O'Donnell, Specialist Consultant and Trainer at Plinth House. Susan has extensive experience in risk management and corporate governance, and has particular expertise in safeguarding and Prevent arrangements in higher education. Will the session be recorded?

We've decided not to share a recording of the session as we want to make attendees feel comfortable about sharing their experience and challenges in their own institutions. We really encourage you to switch your webcam on if you can, as we find this makes for a better quality discussion. Where a conversation reveals useful insights from the sector, we will collate a briefing note after the event and publish this. The conversation will be governed by Chatham House rules so that the briefing note will not be attributing any named individuals or institutions.
