Balancing compassion with boundaries when working with students: a half-day online training event
One-to-one interactions with students can be challenging - such as when delivering bad news to a student, or when a student is angry, passive or disengaged. This session explores how we can show compassion in these interactions while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

About the event
Do you sometimes find yourselves in one-to-one interactions with students that you find challenging? These interactions can take many different forms. They may arise when we are having a particularly tricky conversation with a student – for example, when we are talking to a student about their academic performance or when we have to deliver bad news. They may also be situations in which we are working with a student who is frustrated, hostile, or is very passive and not engaging with our ideas and suggestions. How do we show compassion in these interactions, while also setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries?
This three hour online live training event provides an opportunity to explore these kinds of tricky situations and take away practical ways to respond effectively the next time we find ourselves in these situations with a student.
Who is this session for?
This session is aimed particularly at colleagues in student-facing roles, whether in an academic or professional services capacity. The session uses examples that reflect more academic and course-related interactions, but many of the skills that are covered are relevant to all colleagues who work with students.
While this training is aimed at higher education, colleagues in further education, colleagues delivering private tuition or colleagues working in other similar educational settings will also find the content very relevant.
Colleagues who have attended our other course on ‘Managing distressed students’ will find it helpful to attend this course too. The two sessions (‘Managing distressed students’ and ‘Balancing compassion with boundaries’) complement each other and focus on different types of interactions with students.
Learning outcomes
During this event, participants will:
Discuss the kinds of interactions that can be, or can become, difficult in one-to-one work with students – such as when we are having a tricky conversation with a student about their academic performance or engagement, or working with a student who is becoming hostile.
Reflect on how we get the balance right in these interactions, by being supportive and engaged with the student while also maintaining appropriate boundaries and looking after our own wellbeing.
Explore and learn about key practical skills for responding to different types of difficult interaction.
